Sorry if this is an obvious question, but I am very new to the game, and have no idea what one of these clubs are used for  I was going to ask in my local golf shop, but (a) it was too busy and (b) i didn't want to look foolish not knowing 
Also, do I need one, and how much do I need to pay As I said I am a real beginner.

Hi Peter
A Hybrid is a club that is easier to use than the long irons. They are a lot more forgiving and easier to get up in the air. You can see a lot more tour players now exchanging their long irons for hybrid clubs.
