Hi,
I'm a total beginner and have yet to invest in a set of clubs. So far the lessons I've had have been with a 6 iron and that's it.
I'm left-handed and now considering what set of clubs would be best to start with? Some friends have said get a cheap set - like those you see for about £100 for everything! Then my golf coach says no, he's going to keep an eye out for a second hand set. Or do I look on eBay?
I'm very determined to the challenges that this game has throw at me so far and I'm really keen to play, but don't have a bottomless pocket for everything. So a brand new top of the range set is out of the equation. Any ideas/answers appreciated.
Best wishes,
Richard

Hi Genius,
I started playing last year and I bought a second hand set of irons and a cheaper end driver. It works for me as I don't feel so bad when I hit the clubs into the ground (which you will do when you are learning). Just don't spend too much.

Mark,
Thanks for your reply.
I've now asked my golf coach to keep an eye out for a half decent set of left hand clubs.
He reckons doing it this way I would still get something for them once I progress onto
a more expensive set. As opposed to buying a cheap set of new ones and not getting anything
for them when I wanted to upgrade.
Watch this space and I'll let you know how I go on.
I'm hoping I can get set up quickly as me and a friend are planning our first round of golf on
a course this weekend.(I've only had lessons and been on the driving range so far.
Best wishes,
Richard

Definately go for a used set. Some people change their clubs frequently. Their old clubs are fine , and technology doesn't change that quickly. I would advise that you go for clubs that are one or two years old, and let others splash out hundreds of pounds on this years model of the clubs they bought last year. If it was possible to BUY a good golf swing, I would tell you to go for the best/most expensive on the market. But it simply is NOT POSSIBLE. Get playing and start to enjoy the game. Then go back to your pro. He sounds like a decent guy. As for me.... I use Ebay for most of my purchases.. and I buy second hand. Sometimes this means clubs a month old, sometimes a year or two old.

Try looking at the golfbidder website, it is not an auction site but sells second hand clubs that have been traded in with PGA professionals.

I am a beginner like yourself. I got a really cheap set of clubs by going into various specialist golf shops asking if they had any second hand sets for beginners. A friend of mine also got a good price on a second hand set from www.golfbidder.com. There is a link to them on the home page of this site.
