I very rarely sleep well before a competition or society day out. I either have problems getting to sleep or wake up about 3am or 4am and cannot get back to sleep. I know it's to do with anxiety and probably a fear of doing bably but how can I get a proper nights sleep ? I am a fairly steady player so don't often have really bad days, so it does not make sense to worry about it. Any suggestions will be most welcome.

This is definitely your sub-conscious at work and although when you are awake you are able to rationalise how you feel, because as you say you rarely play badly, there is possibly something you are not dealing with that is taking over when you sleep. It is difficult without a telephone coaching session with you to find out what is triggering this as dealing with it will help you sleep a lot better. But, the good news is you have definitely created a 'belief' that you are going to wake up so regardless of how you think you are feeling you will wake up! You need to break what essentially is now a habit you have created on the night before a competition. You are expecting to wake up - so you do! Your subconscious works so that it can make you right so by expecting to wake up - you will! You need to start creating a 'new belief' - start with saying to yourself just before you go to sleep 'I am going to sleep really well tonight - I always sleep well before a competition'. This is going to take a few goes as like breaking any habit it needs to be repeated. You have probably been saying to yourself before you go to bed 'I bet I wake up in the night as usual' - so your sub-conscious will oblige. Watch your self-talk and tell your sub-conscious how well you sleep before a competition - and it will help support you the same way it did with the old habit. But remember you may need to try this a few times until you have lost the old belief. You will also need a good night's sleep so you have factual evidence that it is possible... above all else watch what you tell yourself just before you go to sleep! Eye Roll
