Hi I am Nuala, I was a founding director of the Pilates Institute UK, I have recently re-located to the South of France where I will operate my new business as a mentor, advisor and consultant for all things Pilates. I will be writing for Playgreatgolf on the subject of - yes - Pilates for the Golfer and how it can help improve the quality of your game. I look forward to receiving your questions.

Hi Nuala it's Gail here Confidence Coach for the site - I look forward to working alongside you in helping all the Play Great Golf members get fit for golf in mind and body
I am really interested in how Pilates can help improve flexibility, balance, posture and so on because this all helps a golfer to be more confident in their playing abilities which will reflect in their mental state as well.
Look forward to reading all your tips ... WELCOME!

Thanks Gail. The new series we have started POSTURE IS EVERYTHING will certainly answer all those questions over the next few weeks.

Hello Nuala,
I am pleased you have joined the site and look forward to reading your articles. I was thinking about pilates recently as I am a middle aged man who has been playing golf since I was a boy, I am also rather tall (6'5" but in reasonable shape.I have always maintained good posture in the golf swing but the years are catching up and I can feel I am losing flexibility resulting in a shorter backswing,do you think pilates would help? Do you have any suggestions for someone who does not have the time or regular lifestyle to go to classes? Also what is the difference between pilates and yoga (or is that a stupid question)?
Sorry to ask so much but I think you may be able to help me and no doubt others.
Thanks
Hibbo

Hi Hibbo
Well firstly age is definitely not a factor with practicing Pilates, and especially with flexibility - this is not an area of the body that needs to change as we age - although of course many of us find it does. The difference between Pilates and Yogs? mmmmm well I am asked that alot and my usual answer is that although Joseph Pilates was influenced by Yoga, there is no religious aspect to the technique, although with the focus and concentration required there is certainly a mind and body connection that could be interpreted as spiritual. These day there are as many interpretations of yoga as pilates, so i suppose the real difference is the continuous cycle of movement that we like to encourage with Pilates practice to experience of flow of movement to create fluidity in the body. You do not need any special equipment if you want to practice at home and over the next few weeks I will be offering readers simple tests and exercises to help with specific postural issues. Thanks for your interest.

Hi Nuala, Nice to have access to an expert such as yourself. I never thought of Pilates in connection with golf before.
