My first set of clubs were a Regal starter set. About 3 years ago I have upgraded the irons in the set to Mizuno Comp CTs. The Comp CTs have performed well and I feel comfortable using them. I play off 28 and I sometimes hit some horrendous shots but mostly I have a slice problem.
I am now considering the Mizuno MX950s. Have tried them out at the range and don't feel that it performs any better than my Comp CTs. The salesman explained that the 950s have up to date technology and would be far more forgiving and should perform far better than my starter Comp CTs.
I have booked a session at the national Mizuno fitting centre in a couple months to ascertain which irons would suit me. In the meantime I occasionally attend a demo day to try out different clubs. As of yet I havent be wowed by any clubs that in my mind is superior to my Comp CTs. Maybe as I am still an inconsistent player, I still havent found my swing so to speak?
What improving iron set would people recommend? Would a fitting session suit a high handicapper as the swing is still inconsistent?

A fitting session can help enormously. You will be told the correct shaft for your swing. That alone could shave 4 - 6 strokes off of your scores. The wrong shaft can cause slicing and hooking. Obviously they will advise the best model of clubs for you. i.e. blades or cavity backs or a blend of both. The grip size and club length and lie angle will also be set up for you.I bought new clubs , and landed up selling them again because they didn't suit me. I bet you have heard complaints like that before........ If I had them fitted then it would have been money well spent. You will gain more from having clubs fitted to your swing and ability, than you will by spending £300 on the latest driver.

I agree, definately wait for your custom fitting session before making a decision, not only will you be properly fitted for loft, lie, shaft length and flex, swingweight and grip size you will also get advice on the composition of your set, for example hybrid/rescue clubs instead of long irons and your correct driver loft to maximise your distance which may help you with consistency on the longer shots. Good luck.

Hi Siupo, I agree with the other two guys. Custom fitting your clubs is very important indeed. However i dont think that in this case it is really the solution you are looking for. I recommend that you go to see your local golf professional for a series of lessons to improve your slice and inconsistant golf shots. Swapping your clubs isnt the answer in this case. also you must play with what you feel comfortable with. 80% of the game is confidence if you dont like the feel of the new irons then dont swap them just because a salesman told you they would do some good for your game. I have had a set of Ben Hogan irons in the bag now for 4 years and i love them. Sometimes new technology isnt good for people. Play with what you feel comfortable with. Spend your money with your local golf professional for lessons to really improve your game.
