Last weekend, when i tried using a brand new sleeve of balls, and lost the first one on the first shot on the first hole 
Until then I had somehow managed to use the same ball for about two 18 hole and four 9 hole games, a feat I was proud of 
So, how long do you use a ball for  Obviously it will deteriorate every time it's hit.
